4.5 stars. Really REALLY good sequel. Dang near perfect (even with the cliffhanger/similar ending to Ruined). Maybe I should round up...

AGGGGHHHH, THE ENDING OF RUINED WAS JUST AGGGHHHH! I'd prefer this series to be a duology, given the ending of

, but right now all that matters is BOOK TWO PLEASE!!!!

So remember how crazy Olivia went at the end of the first book? That girl was just getting started... there is absolutely no reasoning with her now as she storms around tearing out people's hearts for the thrill of it. She makes Emelina co-queen, but doesn't listen to any pleas for peace. The Ruined have been hunted for so long that Olivia's not about to let Cas or pretty much any other human live.

A lot of alliances get shifted as Cas kind of loses his power to Jovita, who wants to attack the Ruined. Cas starts out being ashamed that his father hunted the Ruined and ashamed to be from Lera. He's pretty quick to give up if something gets hard, but then starts to learn how to lead from Em's example.

Meanwhile Em is torn between her love for Cas, her duty to her people, and her ties to a sister who's becoming a different type of threat. Then Prince August of Olso shows up with a marriage alliance for Em... and he definitely makes the story interesting (but it's never a love triangle).

Cas and Em still had their cute moments, but their relationship wasn't the focus of this book. Aren actually had one of the strongest stories and I really liked his character here!

This book felt like a really interesting chess board at times with how all of the characters kept coming together and then rearranging into new groups for sneaky plans, partnerships, or kidnappings. The story kept moving at a decent pace, so I was never bored even if there wasn't a ton happening.

I think one of my stars for this book is out of its association with the first... I did like this story but am missing the enthusiasm I had before. The story here is definitely slower than Ruined and doesn't have the same sense of adventure or danger.

Basically, this second book is a lot of planning and creating alliances until the last 1/3 picks up. So it wasn't the most intense or emotional read, but the characters & world are still strong!

Thank you to the publisher for sending me an ARC.

I will find myself thinking "Okay...so when the characters get to X, obviously this will happen" and then something will happen that I did not see coming preventing whatever I thought was inevitable from ever happening.

    I may have enjoyed

more than it's predecessor. Now here comes the problem with reviewing sequels. I never want to give away too much of the plot, nor do I want to spoil the first book for those just learning about the series for the first time. This is a series where each book (at least so far) has had a solid ending to the story presented within the book while also leaving things open to where you need to see where the story goes next. And let me tell you..I am in NEED of the third and final book of this series. I am so curious which of the kingdoms will get what they are after because it is clear that not everyone can end up happy. And there is this one relationship that I care about above any of the others. The danger it was put in has me nervous as hell. There is a lot I dying to know actually. Too bad we have to wait until next summer :(

Filled with action, politics, bloody battles, magic, and twists-galore. The romance is still present, though a bit more in the background with all the other craziness at the forefront.

One of the fun things about Avenged is the addition of two other POVs we didn't get in the first book. It was originally just Cas and Em, but now we also get Aren and

(spoiler from first book only). I really loved Aren's story in this book. He became a much bigger character, where he was almost forgettable in the first book. I dare you not to love him. Plus that other POV is everything I wanted from that character. Dark and angry and crazy. It's perfect. Oh and Em and Cas are still sweet. They aren't physically together as much, but they have their moments and are always on the other's mind.

The story definitely begins the way I was hoping it would. It picks up where

left off. I easily was thrown back into this world. The writing is strong with a fast-moving plot. I had a hard time putting the book down. The one thing making it possible was knowing the sooner I finish the book, the longer I'll have to wait for the conclusion.

If you enjoy YA fantasy series filled with revenge, this is a great series for you to read! No second book syndrome here. It is every bit as exciting as book one.

Nothing really happened until the end. It's pretty common for a book to have a boring beginning, middle, and intense ending. To be honest, personally, I hate those books. I love it when books start off slow but give you hints that it will get fast, that the plot will be fully developed in the right way, and that the characters that are useless and annoying change in such great ways that you end up falling in love with them. In Avenged,

Honestly, I don't even think the description of this book accurately

    I remember finishing

and despite me not completely loving it, I still enjoyed many parts of it, especially Em and Casimir's character. I love their development with each other and by themselves and I loved how they actually found a way to be together. I was actually excited to read more about them in this book. Although I did,

Luckily, there isn't a love triangle in Amy's books. Luckily, she isn't one of those writers that decide to tease and make their readers suffer at times because of love triangles

I even tried getting an advanced reader copy from Harperteen but because I don't have a bookblog in any way (youtube, wordpress, tumblr blogging), they declined it. Now, I really don't even care for the next book. I heard this was gonna be a duology first but then it turned out to become a trilogy and I'm not even that hyped up for it. Avenged was one of my

anticipated releases for 2017, and seeing that Ruined got some pretty good reviews of my friends and seeing they were excited for this one,

    To start off,

Em was such a great and pretty fierce heroine in Ruined, but she's so different in Avenged. Instead of her being fierce, it's her sister, Olivia. Remember Olivia? She got kidnapped and Em basically had to disguise herself as the wife of Casimir, the prince, and pretend to be in love with him and do all these marriage stuff until he found out and until she killed almost everyone and was able to free Olivia. Now, Olivia is the fierce girl? To be honest,

The story switched point of views in 3rd person but every time it was her pov, I really couldn't stand it. She wanted all the Ruined together and get their kingdom back but it felt like she didn't want to rule it with Em but instead just by herself. She got on my nerves when she acted really tough, and although she is tough and killed people, I still hated her for that. Sometimes it felt like there was no reason for her to kill all these people. She didn't allow others to talk and give reasons, but I guess that's just Olivia. Secondly,

. Not gonna lie, Em wasn't fierce at all. She was pretty damn badass in the first book and even fell in love with Cas while he fell in love with her as well, but this whole story felt like a love story with her and Cas. Everything about her was about her and Cas.

Everything was about Cas for her even when it came to the battles happening, to the conflict, to the plans.

    And now,

Even when I didn't like the 2 main characters, the side characters, and Cas, he was my favorite out of all? He wasn't different like the description says. Honestly, I don't see what's different about him? He wasn't made to be king in my opinion and he didn't ask for his father to be killed by the girl he fell in love with. I think he just needed time to think about everything and process it all. He didn't have it, which I felt bad for, and I just felt bad for him because they didn't trust him completely with anything involving ruling and being the King. Out of everyone,

, the character that actually tried and gave time to himself to think about everything instead of not caring and just saying "kill all the Ruined" when he knew that would've been a bad idea.

What I hated the most out of everything was how she didn't give

information of the previous book. I enjoy sequels and trilogies and series that give a little brief summary or some kind of information of the previous book/s so the reader can remember what he or she is reading and basically remember what is happening. There was some in this one, but there wasn't enough. I wish she gave a brief little summary of Avenged because all in all,

Like I said, she gave some details, and that helped me remember, but it wasn't enough. I wish she gave more information of the side characters including the main characters like Aren, Iria, Olivia, and hell even Marco and Jovita. There were some times where previous characters, dead or alive, were mentioned and brought back some memories, but there were

moments where those characters stories were mentioned or anything about them, not even in the previous book. Her writing was easy to follow, but it was also boring. It was the typical YA fantasy writing and I got bored a lot.

The romance in this was obviously about Em and Cas and they were great together. Honestly, no matter how much I hated Em for just being around Cas and caring about Cas the whole time,

Their scenes aren't gross in any way but instead, they're cute and their relationship is taken in a slow and perfect manner. They developed some character together and moments of them together in any way. I don't care what it is and if it's in the end, I just think they're cute together.

There is really nothing else to say. The plot was something I really didn't follow because I didn't even know what it was and where it was heading. First, we see Em and Olivia helping each other, then they reunite with Cas and other friends, then Em and Cas are making out and wishing they could be together forever, then Olivia is being a little bitch to Aren and making many things worse when she thought she was making them better, then we see the "whole squad" beating their enemies and getting involved in war as if it was nothing and suddenly, the end is near and they're all gathered up and are telling each other

    and

(*highschool musical plays*) and suddenly it's the end.

I LOVE this series!! Cas + Em! My new favorites Aren + Iria. The action is awesome!! Olivia is insane! But I kind of loved some of her lines. The humor is some of the best aspects of this series. So freaking good, and now to wait another year... *sigh*

Despite the cover being blue and Em looking 500% different than she did on the front of

    ...

I'm so pleased! It reminded me how much I adore this author's style, with the incredibly dry humour and sharp dialogue and characters who will break your heart. Literally tho. This book is super bloody. (But not gory.) Please fall in love at a distance or you're likely to lose your head.

I just faceplanted back into the world most gloriously (the world was glorious, that is, my faceplant...less so) and there was no disconnect at all.

There's a lot more meetings and politics, which I admit I wasn't such a fan of. But it keeps those concise and balances it with epic (and engaging!) action scenes and basically the Ruined being incredibly badass and terrifying.

THAT IS SO EXCITING. I CAN'T EVEN. I've never read a book with two lethal, epic, badass sister queens. I officially want 900 more. And Olivia is pretty keen on murdering everyone because Why Not™. So there's plenty of blood and murder and limbs being ripped off and Olivia being chill about it which is, quite frankly, disturbing. Everyone is disturbed.

And the stakes were high, but they didn't really worry me? I kind of feel like all the favourite characters get cushioned a bit much. But I am also a horrible horrible person so pls excuse me.

    .

Oh I love her so much! She is SO wry and sarcastic and diplomatic and sensible. While Olivia is like bathing in the blood of her foes, Em is like "ok but could we talk to them first". Communication levels with Em are A+ WHICH IS SO REFRESHING TO READ.

: MY DARLING CAS CHILD. He gets smacked about a lot in this book and he is a sweet precious cinnamon scone. I

reading about sweet boys and lovely kings and Cas is BOTH and he is glorious. And so dryly sardonic too. Someone poisons Cas. Cas's reaction: "But at least the soup tasted really nice." #BlessHim

yep she's scary. But I loved how the story showed a venerable side to her too, and she did have

honour. Like one time Em said "don't kill Cas" and Olivia didn't! MIRACLES! But otherwise she. is. a. psychopath. She kills and she likes it and she's such bad news but YAS I LOVE READING ABOUT HER.

: I was dubious about him having a narrating POV because why sir. But turns out I love Aren. He is super powerful and yet has a lot of PTSD meltdowns and he was so well written and realistically done that I just <3 <3 <3

Oh and brief SHRIEK over Cas' guards, Mateo and Galo, who are ADORABLE and I ship them and also I love how they protect Cas like he is their cinnamon child.

This news just in: Cas is everyone's cinnamon child.

Also Violet was a new addition to the story and she is capable, smart, and lovely.

Also Cas' cousin Jovita is evil and I would like to fry her into soup.

And the dialogue is crisp and often witty. It's pretty modern humour too, which I adored, even if it didn't feel totally time-frame-appropriate BUT LIKE WHO CARES. I LOVE THESE JOKES.

    There

a lot of walking/travelling which I find dull, but at least we didn't spend years wandering in a swamp or anything. I never felt the need to nap. Which is a miracle because napping is my favourite. Second only to cake and stabbing.

Cas and Em are a little dysfunctional, ya know, with their people murdering each other and all that. #MinorDetails But THEY'RE STILL SO CUTE and I want them to work out and dryly sass each other into a happy marriage or death or whatever.

If Olivia doesn't MURDER EVERYONE FIRST.

Obviously the best combination. It wasn't

as good as the first book, for me, but I have really nothing to complain about because I LOVED IT STILL SO MUCH. And soft sweet Cas and wry capable deadly Em are my favourites.

4.5 STARS (for now)! I'm not sure whether I want to round up or down so I'll decide that later.

So, I was sitting in my bed on Friday morning and I was scrolling through Instagram when I saw that my local dymocks had early stock in. I instantly screamed and ended up rushing to my store (I was the first in the door at 8:30am and I checked my book out by 8:33am). The lady at the shop was basically as excited as I was and we fangirled about how many good books are coming out - it was great.

Anyways, this book was AWESOME. I loved

so I had pretty high hopes for this and it was honestly just as good. Honestly, I'm only docking 0.5 stars since it wasn't ACOWAR and I can't seem to think about any book that isn't ACOWAR. THIS BOOK WAS JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST ONE HOLY SHITTTT EVERYTHINGS GOING TO SHITTTTTT. I can't imagine waiting a whole year for the next book. My god, this book was great.

OLIVIA IS MENTAL OH MY GOD SOMEONE PLEASE KILL HER. If you thought she was wild before, YOU ARE IN FOR AN INTENSE RIDE. She honestly cannot be reasoned with and she's absolutely lost her damn mind. I went from loving her being crazy to going WHAT THE FUCK OLIVIA GO DIEEEEE. I think she needs to die honestly but maybe she can finally settle down eventually????

Cas and Em are A+ as always. I love them both just as much as before and OMG THEY GOT INTERRUPTED BY A GOD DAMN WAR AND I SCREAMED AT THE BOOK WHEN THAT HAPPENED. Anyways, they didn't exactly cross paths as much in this book since they both have their own crazy dramas going on but I loved them so much.

AREN AND IRIA STOLE MY HEART!!! I have so many feels. I loved Aren so so much in the first book and he

. I just love him as a character and the fact that he has such raw emotions in this book broke my heart. I love when people get so caught up in these crazy wars that they forget wtf they're doing and then they think about it and go

. Iria was such an amazing character and I was 50/50 on my feels about her before but now I'm so sold on her. I loved them. Such a great pair and they're so

THE ENDING WASN'T EVEN THAT BAD BUT I'M STILL ANNOYED ABOUT HAVING TO WAIT A YEAR FOR THE NEXT ONE

    - second book syndrome

    - olivia is crazy don't even try and tell me she isn't

    - aren was boring and gave me major Chaol vibes and that isn't good

    - weird dialogue

    - seriously why did no one stab Olivia

    - Cas was great

    - Em sucked tbh

    - I really don't know what happened in the last like five chapters so i'll need someone to tell me what did (caitlin or maggie pls help a girl out)

    - i wanna smooch Cas still

    - but he was dumb

    - like majorly dumb

    - like someone stab him dumb

    - i just wanted to stab a lot of these characters

    - I liked violet

    - violet was probably the best character

    - what even was the plot

    - too much

    - honestly

    - i'm disappointed

    - i wanted more

To summarise, this book had hardcore second book syndrome and suffered from not enough important events happening. It's all clearly leading to the final book, but in this particular book it was weakly executed. I found myself doing anything BUT read.
